​About me

​​Hello! I’m Ming Sun (孙铭), Assistant Professor at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, William & Mary.

My research centers on quantitative fisheries science, stock assessment, fisheries management, and marine ecosystem dynamics. I develop and apply statistical and modeling approaches to better understand population dynamics, evaluate management strategies, and inform sustainable use of marine resources.

Growing up in the coastal city of Qingdao, China, I developed an early and lasting interest in the ocean and the challenge of balancing resource use with conservation. I am particularly interested in how human–ocean interactions vary across ecological systems and cultural contexts, and how quantitative tools can support evidence-based fisheries management.

​Outside of academia, I enjoy reading history, listening to music, and following sports.

​Recruiting Graduate Students

The Sun Lab at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), William & Mary, is actively recruiting 2 graduate students to join my lab at VIMS, W&M, beginning in Fall 2027. We are seeking motivated students with interests in stock assessment, quantitative fisheries science, and fisheries simulation modeling. Successful applicants may be admitted to either the MSc or the Ph.D. program, depending on their qualifications and interests.

You are encouraged to apply if you:
  • Are passionate about using quantitative approaches and simulation modeling to understand population and fisheries dynamics;
  • Are open to interdisciplinary approaches (combining quantitative analysis and socioeconomic perspectives) to support sustainable fisheries management and aquatic conservation;
  • Have an interest in statistics, programming, and computer simulation;
  • Have academic training or experience in marine biology, fisheries science, statistics, or related fields.
